Malla hits unbeaten ton in drawn U-19 match

Middle-order batsman Raghunath Malla followed his unbeaten half-century with an unbeaten century to help host Odisha share points with Saurashtra in their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 Group-A league match, which ended in a draw here at Ravenshaw University Ground today.

Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 253 runs and resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 71 for four, the home team batted through out the final day to finish the match 241 for five. However, Saurashtra gained three points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Odisha settled with one point.

Malla was the star of the match, scoring an unbeaten 110 (319 balls, 16x4) in the second innings. His 109-run partnership for the fifth wickets with Aakash Ch Nayak saved Odisha from defeat. Nayak slammed 67 with the help of 10 fours and two sixes. Odisha will next meet Chhattisgarh at Raipur from November 19 to 22.

Earlier in reply to a huge first-innings total of 473 by Saurashtra, Odisha were all out for 220. Though Kunal Mallick, Raghunath Malla and skipper Swastik Samal scored a half-century each, Odisha failed to muster a sizeable total. Pacer Sachin Parmar bagged five wickets for Saurashtra.

Sachin Mevada, Bhavin Engle and Diprajsinh scored a half-century each, while five other batsmen made notable contributions in the first innings of Saurashtra after put into bat by Odisha. Among Odisha bowlers, Krishna Palai was most successful, taking three wickets for 117 runs, while Umesh Yadav picked up two for 78. The home team’s fielding was impressive and resulted in the run out of three opposition batsmen.
